Asset Management
Design Decision Model
Dealing with the potential for external and internal corrosion of buried Ductile iron pipes is a key factor to consider in the pre-design stage of water and wastewater projects. Modern Ductile iron pipes are furnished with a cement-mortar lining unless otherwise specified by the purchaser. Cement lining is intended to combat tuberculation by providing a physical barrier to the water. In addition, cement linings are smooth, which results in high flow coefficients.
Accordingly, the Design Decision Model (DDM®), a risk-based model developed by DIPRA and Corrpro, can be used by engineers as a tool to assess the likelihood and consequence of external corrosion for transmission and distribution mains. The DDM analysis will guide engineers in selecting the proper corrosion control method for new Ductile iron pipe installations.
Consequently, The DDM analysis and standard cement-mortar lining allow engineers to properly protect Ductile iron pipes in corrosive environments, thus ensuring the century-long service life of Ductile iron pipes.
Asset Management Tips & Training
Life Cycle Cost Analysis of modern Ductile iron pipes is impacted mainly by making the proper upfront decisions regarding structural design, selecting a corrosion control method, installation method, and anticipated maintenance programs. DIPRA’s technical resources assist decision-makers in retaining their future Ductile iron pipe assets for an indefinite life, yielding long-term benefits through proper asset management strategies.
The asset management strategies should be properly conveyed to stakeholders through effective communication, training, and on-site assistance. Thus, the Ductile iron pipe industry seeks to optimize the technical knowledge of municipal and consulting resources in North America through our Regional Engineer Program, a technical service, providing accurate information on corrosion research on iron pipes for over 75 years, thereby raising awareness on ANSI-AWWA Standards for structural design, manufacturing, corrosion control, features, and installation of Ductile iron pipes.
